“The ‘still-act’ is a concept proposed by anthro-
pologist Nadia Seremetakis to describe moments when a subject interrupts historical flow and practices historical interrogation… The still acts because it interrogates economies of time, because it reveals the possibility of one’s agency within controlling regimes
of capital, subjectivity, labor, and mobility.”
-Andre Lepecki, Exhausting Dance
This cultural identity was developed for the exhibit
Still Action co-curated by Libby O’Bryan and Elissa Papendick, which ran in SAIC’s Sullivan galleries from August to October in 2010. In addition to visual explorations, my initial research involved a few close readings of Seremetakis’s writing, and an interview with the gallerists about their interpretations of the text.
I attempted to capture a few key ideas that came out of my research including the fragmentation of experiences, of traveling into nostalgia, of attempting to bring back
a taste that we can only remember. The logotype is simultaneously evocative of heavy industry and needlepoint. In keeping with these ideas, I chose the format of a travel postcard to communicate and promote
the show.
